Thumbs up Coopersonic Tube Overdrive - its Killer

I just have to spread the word about this thing. I picked it up about two weeks ago now and think i've just found my favourite dirt box. It's an overdrive powered by two 6N2PEV valves (it can take regular ecc83's) with controls for dirt, level, treble and bass. More info at http://www.coopersonic.com

Ordering was simple, i picked mine up off their ebay shop and the service was as quick and freindly as i've experienced. No problems here.

The build quality is excellent, chunky die-cast aluminium box, all the jacks and switches feel good and the knobs move smoothly. Overall this thing feels like you could nuke it and it would still work.

And to the sound. At low gains and with low output pickups its a damn good sounding overdrive that can do anything from stupidly dark to thin and raspy depending on tone controls. It's got a bit of a marshall JTM45ish vibe. Its worth noting that its not so good for almost totally clean sounds as it's got quite a hairy kind of response.

But with the gain cranked up i've been most impressed, it's a bloody tube fuzz box! The sound can get very nasty while still retaining a real charecter in a way that i've never heard before. It can be both biting and fat at the same time.

The bass and treble controls have a huge range. This is actually one of my complaints as i cant really see any use for the extreme values on either control, you can really remove the whole top/bottom of the sound or boost them insanely. On the plus side though i'd rather have too much range than not enough.
There is probably enough gain for the vast majority people, though it dosn't get quite as crazy as my DAM Meathead at full whack. There is a good boost available from the level control, particually with a higher gain sound. Considering the level of dirt it cleans up well and dosn't sounds clear and warm when used like this.

I've been trying to think of good words to desribe the character but the best i can think of is its a fuzz with tubes not transistors. The sound clips on the site are a pretty good indication of the sound but I dont think they really convey quite how much this pedal can do.

On a personal note i'm grinning from ear to ear as i think i've finally nailed Josh Homme's tone (queens of the stone age).

I have a feeling i may be ranting about this for some time.

George.

I love tube o.d pedals. I'll have to look into this one. Thanks for the heads up!
